Papers, ca. 1942-2000.

Contains a letter from Kearl's wife detailing his service in the military. Bulk of the letter describes two different situations at the battle of Komandorski Island in which Kearl's survival is ascribed to divine intervention. Also includes a passage recounting missionary experiences while in the service. Collection includes three newspaper articles: Jack Goodman writes about the U.S.S. Salt Lake City and its history, with an emphasis on the battle at Komandorski. John Bishop writes about the battle from the perspective of the four destroyers that also participated. Michael Morgan also gives an account of the battle from the perspective of both the commanding officer and the crew of the U.S.S. Salt Lake City. Photographs show Kearl in full military dress, with fellow seamen, and in his later life. Also included is a photograph of the U.S.S. Salt Lake City.
